South Lake Tahoe
Route Information: May 11-12, 2017 - Women's Stage 1 and 2
Lake Tahoe, jewel of the Sierra, is rimmed by majestic mountains and touted as a national treasure for its pristine blue waters. It boasts a rich western past for its role as a vital resource for native Indians and gold and silver mining boom. Designated "America's Best Lake" by USA Today readers (Aug. 2012), Lake Tahoe combines the distinctive appeal of two worlds: spectacular natural beauty and a modern tourism destination with an array of outdoor recreation, entertainment, nightlife and gaming. Tahoe's timeless splendor and an emerging economic diversity toward health and wellness, green business practices and sustainability continue to define its inimitable personality.
Lake Tahoe has been recognized by national media outlets including Good Morning America, Travelocity, Orbitz, USA Today, ESPN The Magazine, and others for its scenic splendor and reputation as a leader in outdoor recreation, entertainment and dining. Lake Tahoe has been designated as a “Bike Friendly Community,” so bike paths for the social spin are plentiful as are shops staffed by experts that rent and sell high-quality bikes. The famed loop around Lake Tahoe is 72 miles of scenery: deep blue water, Douglas fir groves, and breathtaking views of Emerald Bay. The road also passes quaint waterfront lodging and plenty of eateries to fuel the journey.
At an elevation of 6,300-feet, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America – 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, with a surface area of 193 square miles. It's the third deepest lake in the U.S. with an average depth of 989 feet, with the deepest point at 1,685 feet. The water in Lake Tahoe is 99.7 percent pure.
"It's America's largest cycling event at America's Best Lake," said Carol Chaplin, President and CEO of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. "Hosting not only the women’s Stage 1 race in 2016 but also the Men's Stage 5 Finish was a fantastic opportunity to challenge top-level athletes with our natural environment and help to elevate awareness of women's racing as a prestigious sport. We’re pleased to have the women return for Stage 1 and Stage 2 in 2017 and Lake Tahoe is looking forward to hosting the competitors, sponsors, fans and media to an area where the local culture enthusiastically supports, inspires, embraces and appreciates the sport."
