One of the most exciting parts of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women’s Race is that with 18 of the best teams in the world, and only four stages available to win, the competition for stages and the yellow jersey is fierce.
Stage 3 saw Ali Tetrick riding on her home roads in and around Santa Rosa, and Ali certainly put forth a performance that will make the hometown proud. Stage 3 saw a select group form over the climbs and breakaway. It was an exciting dynamic that took place – normally select groups like this will form on important mountain stages, with a mountain top finish – but with a course that was deemed rolling, and that featured a long run into the technical circuits in downtown Santa Rosa, it was indicative of the expected attacks on the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women’s Race Leaders Jersey.
When you look at the beginning of the stage, specifically when reviewing Alison Tetrick’s heart rate data, you see that there was a relaxed start to the stage as the peloton warmed up their legs; a relaxed peloton can easily lead to breakaways.
The UV Exposure on the day is interesting. Over a recorded 3 hours and 26 minutes of racing, the Microsoft Band recorded roughly 1 hour and 30 Minutes of exposure. The day’s weather saw rain and sunshine, highlighting the many and changing conditions of the Santa Rosa stage.
It looks like Doris Schweizer chooses to wear her Microsoft Band 2 with the screen out as she only recorded 13 minutes of sun exposure. Personally I wear the Microsoft Band with the screen on the top of my wrist as well; most of the riders and staff wear it the opposite way with the UV reader on top.
Schweizer’s MPH and map data reveals a hilly stage with a lot of fluctuation in speed. The hilly profile had led to multiple groups forming, and she worked hard to connect her group with the lead groups as they sped into the circuits of Santa Rosa. When entering circuits the multiple turns make it difficult to gain time, so the group that you enter the circuits with, is usually the one that you will finish the race with.
